Sergio Azzolini was born in Bolzano in 1967. He began the bassoon with Romano Santi at the age of eleven, graduating from the conservatory of his home town. After this he went on to further study with Klaus Thunemann at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover; immediately after obtaining his diploma there he was appointed to a teaching post at the Musikhochschule in Stuttgart. In 1998 he moved to the Musik-Akademie in Basel, where he currently teaches the bassoon and chamber music.

A prizewinner at many international events (the Prague, Munich (ARD), and Carl Maria von Weber competitions), he has a busy schedule as a concert and recording artist with major European orchestras. Over the past few years, his personal research into period sound and aesthetics has allowed him to familiarise himself with historically informed performance practice and to develop an original technique based not only on copies, but also on authentic period instruments still playable today, of which he has a large collection.
